Pageants are of many kinds - ones that have contestants flaunting their cosmetic enhancements, ones that have decked-up Barbie dolls, ones have that over-weight women fighting for the crown and ones that have goats competing for a crown!
They are quirky, crazy and bizarre but they all have one thing in common - they are all beauty pageants! Below is a list of 9 most bizarre beauty pageants in the world.
1. Miss Plastic Hungary
This is a pageant that's open ONLY for women who've undergone some sort of cosmetic surgery. It could be anything - a breast implant, a nose job or a facelift. The only thing that counts is a medical record or certificate to prove the cosmetic surgery. And it's not just the contestants who win prizes; their doctors too get awarded.
2. Miss International Queen
A competition for transgender and transsexual individuals from all across the world, Miss International Queen is held in Pattaya, Thailand every November. It is an endeavour to provide an opportunity for such people to be more accepted in today's world. It hopes to 'build friendship and exchange ideas among international lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender/transsexual communities'.
3. The ugly competition (Concurso de Feos)
The ugly competition, also known as Concurso de Feos in Spanish, is a very strange show where participants are encouraged to twist their faces to look as ugly as possible. Every year in the Spanish city of Bilbao, the Big Week (a nine-day festival) is celebrated where this competition grabs maximum attention. The act of looking ugly is essentially symbolic of people's sense of humour. There are live music shows, bullfights and fireworks as well.
4. Alternative Miss World
The Alternative Miss World was started in 1972 by an English artist named Andrew Logan. What sets it apart from the actual Miss World pageant is the fact that this one is 'not about beauty'. There is no bar on age, nationally or gender and it is all about 'transformation'. The organisers' motto is to allow their contestants free control over creativity. There is, however, one condition: they are not allowed to rehearse!
5. The Mini-Miss pageants
It has been decades that children's beauty pageants have been around. The Little Miss America pageant began in the '60s in New Jersey but unfortunately it was restricted only to teenagers from 13 to 17 years of age. The latest edition of the Mini Miss UK pageant will be held in October 2013. But recently, similar pageants have been banned in France after the senate voted against them. It is a move to protect young girls from being sexualised. The law forbids anyone under the age of 16 to enter into a beauty pageant and awards a punishment of up to two years in prison and fines of up to 30,000 euros to those who enter under-aged girls in pageants.
6. Miss Barbie
Miss Barbie is a beauty contest for Barbie dolls! Yes, you read that right. In this, the iconic dolls are given signature looks comprising a customised hairstyle, dresses, and swimsuits, complete with accessories. The Barbie dolls have their own names, body measurements and invented professions. The contestants who are Barbie fanatics ensure their dolls follow the latest fashion trends so as to win the Miss Barbie Venezuela title.
7. Miss Jumbo Queen Contest
The Miss Jumbo Queen contest was first held in May 1997 in Thailand. It was an attempt to promote a lady who according to the pageant's website "exhibits the characteristics of the majestic pachyderm to persuade people to support the cause of elephant conservation in Thailand". The pageant is open to all women, married or otherwise, who weigh at least 80 kilos and are aged between 18 and 35 years of age. They must also have a pleasant personality and good inter-personal skills.
8. Prison Beauty Pageants
For countries like Russia, Brazil, Angola and Philippines, hosting beauty pageants for women in prisons is not uncommon. The idea of putting the inmates' time to good use is not surprising. These pageants have been criticised but several activists have also supported them by claiming these contests help inmates boost their self image and is a welcome change in their monotonous routine.
9. A beauty contest for goats
On 5 July, 2010, a goat named Grazyolyte beat 13 other goats in a competition held to commemorate the 640th anniversary of a village called Ramygala in Lithuania. The goat is a symbol of that village and it has been so from the medieval times. The idea is to crown the most beautiful goat in the village!
